Demand boosts heifers at Naracoorte

HEIFERS sold to $720 and steers to $710 as agents at Naracoorte, in South Australia, yarded 3500 cattle for their final weaner sale of the season last week.

Many calves from the yarding sold to NSW, where they will be used for breeding or fattened on grass.

While steers sold at similar to slightly-dearer rates to previous Naracoorte offerings, heifers, which included feature Simmental-cross breeding lines, were in strong demand.

A pen of Simmental-Red Angus heifers topped the sale, selling to Gippsland breeders for $720.

The top pen of steers weighed 381kg and sold for $710, after being weaned and shipped from Tasmania last August and put on grass at Naracoorte.

Weights were displayed on the heavier steer pens, but the sale itself was conducted on a dollars-per-head basis.

Steers mainly sold for 180-205c/kg, with heifers making 160-180c/kg and continuing to sell strongly for the entire sale.
